Refining my minimalist roadside setup: My notes on the trade-offs between weight and power.
Over the last few months, I’ve been obsessed with slimming down my jersey pockets and have tested the most talked-about setups on my solo loops to see what actually works.
I started with the manual standard, like the Lezyne Pressure Drive. While it’s indestructible and removes all battery anxiety, the reality of pumping a road tire to 90 PSI in the summer heat is honestly exhausting, and it takes up significant room in my jersey or on the frame. Then I moved to the Cycplus AS2, which is widely considered the all-rounder with its fast inflation and solid build. However, at 190g, I still found it to be a bit of a "brick" in my pocket when I was trying to keep my setup as light as possible.
Most recently, I've been using the ISAMUTO BL01. At 112g, it's the lightest electric option I’ve found so far, making it very easy to carry in a pocket. The trade-offs are specific: the casing gets quite warm after one full tire inflation, the battery is limited to about two fills per charge, and it is slower than the larger AS2. However, for a minimalist kit, the small footprint is the main factor for me.
It’s interesting to see how portable tech is changing the way we handle flats. Are most people here moving toward these micro-electric setups now, or is manual still the standard for your roadside kit?
