Metric cooking and Rationing (the trials of times forgotten)
I purchased a couple of older cookbooks that I found interesting.
Huron Schools Senior Citizens Metric Cookbook 1977-78. What I learned was that in 1975, President Gerald Ford signed the Metric Conversion Act to transition the US away from inches and pounds. Schools across the country rushed to teach children and seniors how to adapt. This cookbook is a direct relic of that shift they were trying to integrate but the US public overwhelmingly rejected the metric change and by the early 1980s any cookbook that had try to switch to metric, went back to imperial.
Old Favorite Honey Recipes (American Honey Institute, 1945) was published right at the end of World War II, due to strict wartime rationing, household sugar was incredibly scarce and so this book was published in mass to help the American household learn how to substitute honey for sugar in everyday baking and cooking.
Both were very fun to read through, and I thought I share a few images.
