Red headed Woodpeckers moved in!
Wanted to share a birdwatching win with you guys!
Ive been watching a pair of red headed woodpeckers drill this hole into the dead tree at the edge of my backyard for about 2 weeks now. There was always one there from dawn to dusk. Even got to watch them kick a bunch of wood dust out of it. I thought originally they were just after bugs, but the hole kept getting deeper and deeper. They have finished it this week and it can fit one and a half red headed woodpeckers in it. They are also successfully defending it against the starlings and a pair of very interested northern flickers.
I love creating an ecosystem in my backyard that allows wildlife to move in and thrive.
