Paid higher salary for new role, now told it wasn’t approved – what are my rights?

I’ve been working for my company since 2019. For the past couple of years, I’ve also been supporting another department alongside my main salaried role.
Recently, a full-time position opened up in that second department. From 1st April, I started being paid at the higher salary for this new role, and I’ve now received that pay for two months.
However, nothing was ever put in writing. I was told that updated contracts would be issued shortly, but I haven’t received anything yet.
Today, I had a phone call from my new manager saying that the pay rise for this role has not actually been approved.
Given that I’ve already been paid the higher salary for two months and have effectively been working in the role, what are my legal rights here?
Any advice would be appreciated.
