We Can’t Do Everything at Once
Substack post from Fillmore.

Substack post from Fillmore.
The Environment and Sustainability Standing Meeting has cancelled four meetings since March and the Transportation Standing Committee hasn’t met since April.
I guess there could be a reason to cancel an individual meeting. But four times?
Transportation is one of the biggest issues right now (congestion, transit, road safety, active transportation). And it’s hard to believe there aren’t any environmental issues requiring Council’s attention.
I find it hard to believe there isn’t any work for these committees to be doing. If the committees aren’t necessary, then maybe we just get rid of them? And if they are necessary, maybe they should actually be meeting and doing some work?
Am I missing something here?
From the article:
Mayor Andy Fillmore has been hinting at the need for a public-private partnership to help shuttle people across the harbour.
The water taxi (FlyeBoat)hopes to fill a void when needed, and work with Halifax Transit.
What do folks think of this? Obviously we don’t want the ferries to be privatized, but surely more service providers is a better option than the s***storm that happened this weekend.
I get the frustration here. People have been dealing with months of disruptions and reduced service, and I understand wanting to do something for riders. But I’m having trouble with the logic. If the ferry system needs more investment and better reliability, does cutting fares just reduce revenue for the exact service we’re trying to fix? I’d rather see a bigger conversation around how we make the system more reliable long term instead of a short-term political move.
