Before Steam : The Lost Network That Gave Birth to Britain’s Railways

Full video here : https://youtu.be/K65SrSBS58w

Before steam locomotives ever existed, engineers were already reshaping the hills of County Durham on a staggering scale.

Hidden in the woods and beneath modern streets are the remains of a forgotten railway network built entirely for horse-drawn wagons. Massive embankments. Lost river crossings. Deep cuttings. Hidden tunnels. Even the traces of bridges that once carried coal high above valleys.

Most people walk straight past these places without realising what they are looking at.

This new Rails and Revolutions episode explores the dramatic surviving engineering of the North East’s ancient wooden waggonways, a transport system that helped lay the foundations for the modern railway age.

Before Steam : The Lost Network That Gave Birth to Britain’s Railways

Most people see Pontop Pike as just a hill with a transmitter mast on top.
But hidden across these moors is the ghost of a transport network older than the steam railway itself.
Buried tunnels. Lost bridges. Forgotten horse-drawn railways. Entire industrial landscapes erased beneath woodland, housing estates, and quiet footpaths.
In this new episode of Rails and Revolutions, I follow the surviving traces of a system that once carried huge quantities of coal across County Durham long before locomotives existed... and uncover engineering that changed Britain forever.
Some of what survives genuinely surprised me.
Including one structure that may still exist beneath a modern sports field.

A dangerous video shoot!

Just found a remote site to make a video about. Downside is that it could be dangerous making this video (which I think I will make when I’ve completed the one currently in production), so I may need the help of my old friend here!

Filming the next video tomorrow, but in the meantime, continuing work on the next video for our Patreons and Channel Members, which has turned into a much larger project than I initially planned lol. Should get a video with a difference though!

Out on a quiet stretch of moorland, something doesn’t add up.

From a distance, it looks natural… a deep scar carved into the hillside by time itself. But the closer you get, the more the landscape begins to feel… unsettled. The ground dips where it shouldn’t. The earth looks as though it’s been disturbed, pulled apart, almost hollowed out from below.

What could leave a mark like this?

This isn’t just a walk across open countryside. It’s a slow uncovering of a hidden story… one that stretches far beneath your feet, where something once reshaped the land from the inside out.

And the strangest part?

This place was never meant to exist at all.
