Should I get an IUD?

Hello all

I (21F) is thinking about getting an IUD. I’ve suffered from horrible periods since I first got them when I was 9. I have a very heavy flow and extremely horrible pain that comes with it. My family doctor put me on birth control pills 4 years ago to help elevate my symptoms, however, I only took them for a year as I felt that my symptoms got worse when I was on them such as causing me more pain, making me bleed longer, and giving me cysts.

After that experience, my family doctor recommended I get an IUD but due to my experience with the pills I decided to hold off and wait until I get a gynaecologist. Fast forward to now I finally got a gynaecologist.

Now here is where my questions and concerns come in. I have a few friends and family who have IUDs and I’ve heard mix ratings on it. While my gynaecologist has said that IUD symptoms vary from person to person, a few of my friends who have it have said that it won’t be a good fit for me based on my symptoms that I already have with my period and that an IUD will make it worse. On top of that my boyfriend’s mom (who also has an IUD) has expressed concerns that getting an IUD will make me infertile.

Based on all this, I am once again feeling unsure if I should get one or not as when I have expressed that I am leaning more towards getting an IUD my friends and family give me looks like I’m not thinking about it enough or making a bad decision.

So people of the internet who have gotten and IUD or know information about it, is there any questions you can answer or information that you can provide that may help me with my decision making?

I should also note that when talking to my gynaecologist she said I most likely have endometriosis (I am in the process of getting tested for it)

Thank you.
