Why do some Muslims act like we can’t laugh at ourselves?

There’s something that genuinely bothers me about our community. Every now and then I’ll come across a funny video where the creator jokingly points out something relatable about our religion in a harmless way, and honestly, I enjoy it. It’s nice being able to laugh at ourselves sometimes instead of taking everything so seriously.

I remember one video showing how crowded a mosque can get, to the point where one guy practically ended up on another guy’s back during prayer. Another one was just about someone wearing funny socks to the mosque. Nothing disrespectful, just relatable humour.

But almost every single time, one of the top comments is someone complaining that these kinds of jokes shouldn’t be made. Like come on… we’re human beings. We can laugh. In fact, I feel like this kind of humour actually strengthens the sense of community because it’s based on shared experiences we all recognize.

Not every lighthearted joke is mockery or disrespect. Sometimes people are just having fun and connecting with each other.
