NSW – Minor car park accident, didn’t leave details. Police want to interview me.
Please, no judgement. Be kind. I already feel extremely guilty and horrible that I didn’t leave my details. I genuinely know I’ve done the wrong thing and will of course willingly provide my details and pay for any damage I may have caused.
Looking for some advice on what I’m realistically facing here and whether I should speak to a solicitor before talking to police.
A couple of months ago I accidentally made contact with a parked car while manoeuvring in a shopping centre car park. It was extremely low speed.
I stopped, got out and inspected the other car and took several photos. There appeared to be some minor cosmetic scuffing/scratches, although there were a number of existing-looking marks on the car and I genuinely don’t know which marks, if any, were caused by me.
I did not leave my details or report it to police.
A witness saw what happened and reported it. Importantly, the witness apparently also told police that I stopped, got out and checked the other vehicle.
Police have since contacted me and an officer wants to meet with me in person for an interview.
I haven’t been charged or issued with an infringement. The officer has indicated that the matter isn’t urgent.
I’ve asked the officer to confirm what offence she is investigating before I agree to an interview.
My main concern is losing my licence or having to go to court. Is this a possibility?
Is this usually dealt with by a fine/demerit points, warning, no action, or court?
I know I should have left my details and I’m not trying to get out of responsibility for any damage. I’m mainly trying to understand the realistic legal/licence consequences and how I should deal with the police interview.
