I’m a Junior in highschool and trying to figure out what to major in. I want to go to Stanford if that info is of any use. I want to hear from people currently majoring in Biomedical Engineering and people already in the workforce. I don’t know if I’ll like it but I somewhat enjoy physics and I want to go into engineering of some sort. So should I? What are y’all’s experiences?
I am a lifeguard at a pool but I also teach swim lessons. The entire thing is super disorganized (all of the parents got the wrong schedule, instructors were never trained, etc) and recently when I was instructing I was teaching level 1 (3-7 years old) and I had a kid who appeared autistic and non-verbal and every time I sat him on the side of the pool he would fall in face first and when I would stand him up he would do the same. I asked him how old he was and he said “five” and that was when I realized that he was not non-verbal and he also wasn’t young enough to simply not now how to stand and sit.
He was literally trolling me for 3/4 of the time and we got like nothing done. I spoke with his parents but basically just said he needed to work on listening and that it was slightly difficult to help him when he clearly didn’t want to be taught (obv phrased nice).
Is there any way to get kids like this to listen and pay attention?
Edit: The lesson was only 20 minutes and it was a 1:1 (my facility normally does 1-4 kids per lesson) and then once I asked him how old he was and he responded (about 15 minutes into the lesson) he would not stop talking for the rest of the class. My younger sister is autistic (not non-verbal but still has higher needs than most kids her age) and I work in the special need children ministry at my church so I have a little bit of experience with autistic children although probably not as much as I should. I hope this gives a little but of extra insight.
