The State Anthem of the USSR performed at the political rehabilitation ceremony for Joseph Stalin. After 6 years of the chaotic liberalizing policies of Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union was left in a weaker position than ever before, with the loss of its Warsaw Pact Allies, and instability within the country. In light of this turmoil, the central committee of the CPSU under General Secretary Dmitry Yazov, decided to politically rehabilitate Stalin, seeing him as a symbol of strength and unity in the face of chaos. His official rehabilitation ceremony took place on the 40th anniversary of his death: March 5th, 1993
