Literary novel, musician protagonist (rock or jazz), big city, third person, 1980s-or-later, possibly neon-letter cover; he finds his car dead in a parking garage and carries the battery to the nearest garage rather than calling for help (most probably in the beginning of the book). If I remember well, he also rents an empty space (a former bar?) and keeps a piano there.
