Getting there

Now with knowledge mainly gained here my two new tanks are cycling. The 20 gallon is home, the two month old filter moved from the 10 gallon, along with a dedicated new filter.

Plan is letting the 55 gallon run for another day or two. Water testing shows both new tanks are fine. The ammonia and nitrate levels were zero in all three fish tanks.

Added three gallons of water from the 10 gallon to the 55 yesterday. Along with ornaments and decorations to help speed up bacteria development. Did the same starting up the 20 gallon.

Started like many.

An old friend posted on a text group that there were going on a long vacation. Had some goldfish that no one could come take care of for a month. I was one of several who offered to take. But only the one able to pickup in two days.

I never have kept goldfish. Several times have kept tropicals. Even had lovely angelfish breeding in last tank in early 80’s with live plants. Vacuuming gravel was a game changer.

Expected to see the fantastic goldfish I used to see in pet shops in Chicago back in the 60’s. Fantails, moors, and others. All fancies, I now know.

Tank was digusting. Green, cloudy water, eight very small comets (know name now), in a 10 gallon. Owner said they owned them for two years and never grew. They were same size when purchased from Petsmart. They tried to return.

I had found a two gallon glass container and filled with filtered water. This was a step up from the tank they were in. After floating fish in tank dumped into new temporary home.

So headed to Petsmart and grabbed another 10 gallon, some gravel, a filter, a net, and a vacuum.

Did 50% water changes for four days letting new tank stabilize. I learned word is cycle. Had one fish die in glass bowl.

Daughter and spouse came to visit. They looked up said each goldfish needs 20 gallon, I needed a 150. Bought a starter 20 gallon setup, made them return.

I looked at feeder tank at Petsmart and there were at least 200 larger comets in a 20. Let it ride.

Had struggles with cloudy water, changed filters, then modified filter. BANG.

Water has been clear since. The water clarifier had little effect, smaller pore sponge in filter cleaned up water, made it sparkle.

But, fish did not cooperate. In less than six weeks they have all doubled in size. A couple tripled.

Got a 55 and a 20 sitting in garage. Stand is supposed to come today. Been rinsing a 100lbs of gravel for three days.

Soaking filters and new plastic plants in water from tank for four days to get some cycling going quickly.

Today is water change day. Will let tank run a little over while new tanks come around. Plan on adding cycled filters and plants maybe Tuesday and fish on Friday. The seven comets are still small.

More coming as the new homes for the comets comes together.
