Patrice Mengue has been found guilty of insulting the President of the Republic and sentenced to six months in prison by the court. The ruling comes several months after his arrest, a case that sparked widespread public debate and drew criticism from human rights organizations.
The case dates back to the death of former Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji. Following the announcement of his death, Patrice Mengue posted a message on his Facebook account that quickly went viral: "Just a little more effort, Lord, we're getting closer to the target." Authorities interpreted the comment as referring to President Paul Biya, considering it an insult directed at the Head of State.
