Would you apply for a job that expects experience you don’t really have?
I have about 4 years of experience in accounting, but honestly, most of my work has been very repetitive day-to-day operations, reconciliations, recurring reporting, and routine processes.
What I don’t really have experience with is managerial-level responsibility.
A recruiter reached out to me and offered me an opportunity for a Senior Corporate Accountant / Investor Accountant role paying $100k+. The job description sounds pretty intimidating. They want someone who can supervise junior staff, own processes end-to-end, review and approve financial statements, tax packages, and audit reports, and regularly communicate with investors, clients, and other managers when issues come up.
Part of me feels like this is the kind of opportunity you grow into. Another part of me feels underqualified and honestly scared to even interview for it.
For people who have made a similar jump, what advice would you give? Did you feel unprepared at first? Would you still take the opportunity?
