Radically change the town of barovia?

Hello everyone! I would like some feedback with someone more experienced with this module than I am.

I’m playing a mix of the original game / reloaded/ something from lunch break heroes and many other sources

My players are in the town of barovia, so we are just starting out (we have some time problems so we play usually 2 times a month)

I used the reloaded fight with the barricades and so on, but we played a bit in the town and they grew attached to some of the npcs, especially bildrath and parrywimple (but they made me make up some other named npcs, like an old lady with an old son and so on) and they are very interested in the mad mery/ Gertruda situation

In the reloaded version there is this encounter with the angry mob outside the burgomaster house when they want to give Ireena to strahd and there is this woman leading them, Alenka, who is going mad for the pain of losing his brother

So I had an idea or a couple of.

I was thinking of making Alenka become a strahd cultist (strahd has now forgiven the town showing benevolence, he is a just leader and everything that happened was the fault of those who decided to defy him and so on) and make the town become like a cultist den, give my players some hint while they go on adventuring so, if they ever decide to go back they can uncover the horror that’s the new barovia

In this situation I see two main roads/things to plan:

  1. I could kill off parrywimple and capture/tieture/mutilate ismark, even make him into a vampire spawn and, in this situation, I could make bildrath into a warewolf (in my imagination he is a slightly evil character but he loves his nephew very dearly, so hi might have tried something to become able to avenge him against Alenka, but I would have him succumb to the lycanthropy and have the party fight him to kill him, maybe recognizing him only after the fight was over)

Or

They could survive the mutiny in town and escape, to give the party a new quest of freeing barovia from the cult of strahd

I know there is so much to do in the module, but we really like the setting and don’t really have any rush to end the campaign!

What do you guys think?

Sorry for my English, it’s not my first language
