Uphill to school and back

So, since I had mixed results with my previous curious pen pal application, I figured I’d try something a little different.

Show of hands. Who here knew how to get down on a pair of roller skates back in the day?

I vaguely remember being able to skate backwards on one skate, which either means I had talent or a complete disregard for my own safety. I honestly couldn’t tell you how many laps I logged while The Gap Band’s “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” echoed through the rink speakers. It was practically an Olympic event.

There was always that one couple who could skate in perfect sync, the birthday kid inhaling pizza and sheet cake, someone desperately trying not to fall during the couples skate, and at least one show off weaving through everyone like they were auditioning for the Roller Derby Hall of Fame.

I’m seriously considering buying another pair of skates. Worst case, I break a bone. Best case, I rediscover a little piece of my youth.

Either way, it got me thinking.

What’s something you were surprisingly good at years ago that you’d love to try again? Or what’s one little slice of nostalgia that instantly takes you back to a simpler time?

Pull up a chair. Tell me a story. I have a feeling the best conversations start with, “Remember when?”

Position Available: One Curious Pen Pal

Location: Somewhere in the Midwest.

Age: 52.

Qualifications: Can rebuild things in the garage, smoke a respectable pork roast, make fresh bread with questionable enthusiasm for kitchen gadgets, and keep fruit trees alive.

Skills: Dry humor. Thoughtful conversation. Mild sarcasm. Listening. Asking questions that usually lead to better stories.

Current hobbies: Reading. Music. Investing. Wondering why the stock market has emotional support issues. Collecting DIY projects faster than I finish them.

Seeking: Someone who enjoys conversations that don’t feel like interviews. Intelligence is attractive. Kindness matters. A playful sense of humor is almost mandatory.

Women tend to be my favorite conversationalists, though I’m always happy to swap stories with the guys about projects, grilling, tools, or whatever else life throws at us.

Flirting? Sure, if it’s mutual. Respect is non-negotiable. Chemistry is a bonus, not a requirement.
Compensation includes laughs, interesting discussions, occasional bad puns, and the possibility of making a new friend.
