I’m 18F and I’ve been working in the housekeeping department for about 4-5 months now. my title is called floor support. basically my job is just to support the actual room attendants it entails Stripping rooms of linen and garbage checking the dirty closets for linen and garbage left by the room attendants and bringing everything down to laundry and the garbage shoot. of course there are other small tasks that they ask me to do but they have always said the #1 priority is stripping the rooms.

heres where my problem comes in. the other day me and my friend (we both work there but we work separately) had one of the supervisors talk to us. they said that this was our very last warning basically saying that the dirty closets shouldn’t get full of garbage and linen. they‘ve explained to us before that when we finish a floor we should go to the dirty closet on that floor and clear it. so we explained we hadn’t gotten to it just yet as we were doing it the way we understood they wanted it done. The supervisor explained here that that’s not what we should be doing and that we should be checking the closet more frequently. My friend and I were both confused as they’d never said to do it that way before and we didn’t fully understand why they were upset with us. Are we expected to come up with new ways to do things? I always thought that I should just do as I’m told.

another point that they brought up was that by the end of the day we should have the dirty closets cleared. they basically asked why we hadnt gotten them done and we explained that we were busy with the rooms on our list as we always were told the rooms are the #1 priority. they told us that yes the rooms are the priority and that so are the closets. By the end of the day we should have the arrival rooms done first and the closets clean. They even said that if we explained at the end of our shift that we didn’t finish all our rooms because we were busy with the closets and other tasks they would understand. But in the past they’ve gotten upset when we finish our shift and we didn’t get all our rooms aren’t all done. So as mentioned it was heavily implied and said that the rooms were the priority which is why we focus more on the rooms than the closets. Now I’m not so sure which is more of a priority.

one last thing they brought up was that the other supervisors shouldn’t have to message us in the group chat to come and do something I think they meant that things should be done. In my defence if a supervisor asks me to do something its because I hadn’t gotten to that task just yet or if it’s that they want us to do a different room it’s because we didn’t know what rooms they wanted us to start with as they didn’t tell us.

theres been other small moments were it seems as though they keep changing how they want us to do things. To be fair this is a new role and they could just be working it out still. But it seems as though they only tell us to change things when they can make it seem like we‘re in the wrong. Not to mention that I’ve noticed on other occasions that the supervisors don’t enti seem to communicate with one another.

I guess my question is should I be taking more initiative to change things or is it that my supervisors are the ones ‘lacking’?
