I love how the society and the republic kinda parallel the union and confederacy, especially near the beginning of dark age with the greatest military minds and initiative held by the society and confederacy but the technology, economy, and popular support held by the Union and Republic. You can even see some religious parallels with Darrow’s fanatics and John Brown using religious fervor to counteract obvious and cynical injustice. It’s not perfect in a few areas like no Real life Red hand equivalent, but I feel like it’s still a really neat parallel.
