Hi everyone, I’m looking for general advice or insight from anyone who has dealt with something similar. I’m keeping details intentionally vague for privacy.
I used to live with a roommate, and over time the situation became extremely difficult. There were ongoing conflicts involving boundaries, communication, and disputes with the landlord. I tried to stay neutral and avoid escalation, but things continued to get worse.
Eventually, my roommate made allegations against me that resulted in police being called. I was arrested based on those claims and also served with a legal order that I didn’t know had been filed earlier that same day.
The charges/case were later dismissed in court due to lack of evidence, and the other party was not able to support their claims. However, the damage was already done:
- I lost my job because of internal reporting policies tied to the arrest
- I had to leave my housing situation immediately
- The arrest still appears on my record
Since then, I’ve struggled to find stable employment in my field. I’ve spoken to a lawyer about possibly pursuing defamation, but was told it would likely be expensive, time-consuming, and not guaranteed to succeed.
At this point, I feel stuck and unsure what to do next.
My main questions:
- Is it worth pursuing legal action in situations like this (e.g., defamation or similar)?
- Are there ways to remove or seal an arrest record when a case is dismissed?
- How do people recover professionally after something like this?
- Has anyone dealt with a false allegation situation that escalated this far?
I’d really appreciate any advice, perspective, or shared experiences. Thanks in advance.
