Hi everyone,
I’m currently a tax accountant in Southeast Asia, and I’m preparing to move to the US with my fiancé. I’ve spent the last four years working in US Taxation (both business and individual), as well as handling payroll and bookkeeping.
I’m trying to figure out the best way to hit the ground running once I arrive. I know the CPA is some thing that people all go for, but since my undergraduate degree is from outside the US, fulfilling the 150-hour requirement will take some time.
I’m looking for some advice:
• EA vs. CPA: Is it worth getting the EA as a secondary option? I’ve heard mixed things. Some say it’s a great bridge, others say it doesn't matter if you eventually get a CPA. Given my experience level, would it help me land a better role immediately?
• Starting as a Non-resident: Should I start the EA exams while still abroad? I want to be as productive as possible while waiting for my visa/immigration papers to be approved.
If you have any other tips for someone in my shoes, I’m all ears. Thanks in advance!
