Random emails not showing in inbox?

So this has happened to me twice in the last month, and it's happened before but I never paid much attention until the stakes were high: I receive a message from somebody forwarding me a copy of an email they sent me earlier that I never received. Yet the original message with the original send time showed up in the message thread with the forwarded copy.

I used to just think I wasn't paying close enough attention, but then it happened again this week with a newsletter that comes from I website I run. I was expecting the newsletter. It didn't show up. It wasn't in spam. I started troubleshooting on the website thinking the newsletter distro was screw up, but it was fine and it was clear the message was sent to me.

So I went into "all mail" in Gmail, and there it was. Then I ran a search and didn't see it. Ran another search and realized it showed up in the search results but was chronologically positioned 10 days earlier than the send date. But when I checked that time frame in my inbox, it still didn't show up.

The message was labeled "inbox" and nothing else. The very same newsletter gets delivered to me every other week without incident.

I've also had situations where I've seen messages turn up in my inbox and then vanish minutes later when I got to look for them to read them. This is how I learned to check "all mail" in the first place."

I don't have filters and nobody has access to my account, and my password is not 123 or anything close to that easy to crack.

Does Gmail just screw up sometimes?
