Guys how does virtue or persistence keep getting around hexproof? The opponent casts it. It should give target creature minus -3/-3 (duh)

I use a hex proof effect. But my creature is still getting minus 3 and dying. I understand indestructible wouldn't help etc. But hexproof should protect my creature right? Please help me understand why I am messing up against this card.
