Woad watch !

Hi everyone, I'm an art student working on a project where I'm creating fabric completely from scratch (growing flax to then process and spin into linen, also working on harvesting and processing nettles similarly) and one thing that I'm not going to be able to grow myself is Woad, which is used for making blue dye, which is a pivotal component in the end product I have in my head regarding this project..

So I did a bit of research and found that one of the very few places in the uk that reliably has wild Woad growing in it is Gloucestershire, apparently specifically on cliff faces?

Well I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a spot that you've recently seen some Woad? In my research I found that July and August are the months when you should pick Woad for it to be most suitable to make dye from, and I know it sounds a bit mad but I am considering flying over from Ireland to come and pick some (this project is really important to me haha), so tip offs to the whereabouts of this plant would be brilliant for me.

Important note on this- I absolutely will not over pick the Woad. I would never want to damage the natural population of the plant so I would only take a little from each plant (hopefully across quite a few)

thanks everyone :)

Solidarity with the women and girls (and others with uteruses) of Belfast

Hi guys, so usually I hate when people take pictures of random people in the street, I find it very invasive and rude, but I had to make an exception for what I saw in town yesterday (did post this yesterday but reddit took it down).

As you can see, these two were posted up with a little table of foetus models trying to get people to sign a ‘pro life’ (anti abortion) petition.

I feel a great deal of anger, sadness and anxiety when peoples anti- woman and girls sentiment makes it past the gates of peoples private thoughts and into the public sphere. Abortion is life saving healthcare, it is a human right. It is absolutely paramount for an equitable society that women have control over their own bodies, and it disappoints me so much that there are still people in the year 2026 who would disagree with that.

Denying abortion is gender discrimination, it is bigotry, plain and simple.

Here are a couple of stats for you:

- Each year, an estimated 80,000 people die from UNSAFE abortions globally. The vast majority of these deaths would’ve been prevented had the people involved had access to safe, medical abortion practices

- Being denied an abortion is often drastically detrimental to a persons short term and long term health, both mentally and physically

- As of July last year, Northern Irelands population of homeless children reached 20,000

- Almost 90% of abortions take place in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Late abortions are very rare.

- Getting an abortion has no link to the development of breast cancer (despite what pro- life Lobbyists might say)

(sources: Amnesty International, Abortion Rights, University of California San Francisco)

These anti- abortionists are not, as they would claim, ‘pro life’. They are pro misery, subjugation and injustice. To truly live ones life you must have choice. And therefore to stand in favour of life is to stand in favour of choice.

To support the right to choose for the women, girls and other members of our community with uteruses, consider giving a quid (or less, of course) to Womens Aid NI.

I originally had a link to donate here but to appease reddits mysterious ‘filters’ I’ve had to remove it. If you do feel like donating, just head to the ’Support Us‘ part of the Woman’s Aid NI website

thank you for reading

Public demonstration against the racist rioters

Hi guys, just thought I’d post this screenshot from progressive politics NI on instagram. In light of the awful things that have been happening recently I’ve seen a lot of people posting on here wondering what they can do to help.

I definitely don’t have all the answers but I think a visual reminder to the immigrants and people of colour of Belfast that we do not stand with this violent bigotry would be useful and necessary.

I think another way that you can help is just by checking in on your neighbours who are immigrants or people of colour, seeing how they are, if they need help with anything and maybe just reassuring them that you are with them and not these racists.

Again I don’t have all the answers and am still looking for ways to help myself, but just thought some might find this useful.

stay safe everyone

Help identifying piece of clothing?

Hi guys so I know this isn’t really the vibe of this sub but i was just wondering if anyone could help me out-

So I’m an English art student and I've got to write an essay for my course, so I decided to do mine about two artists (the Singh twins and Shelly Jyoti) who speak about the history of Indian Indigo in their work.

Anyway as part of it, I have to describe what some of their art looks like, for example the first image here is from one of the pieces I need to write about (from the Singh twins- Indigo: The Colour of India), and i want to describe the top she is wearing but i just don’t know what its called.

Its a painting of Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of emperor Shah Jahan, based of the miniature painting of her on the second slide.

So I know, again, this is a bit off topic for this sub, and pertains more to fashion history more than modern outfits, so i hope it doesn’t come off as odd that I’ve posted this here.. I wanted to post in r/India or r/askIndia but it wouldn’t let me post pictures so i thought maybe someone here would know a what this top is called or could point me in the direction of where to find out more?

Thanks everyone :)

Hi everyone so I'm an art student as a part of my course I want to grow my own textiles, specifically linen. I've found a farmer who is very kindly letting me use some of his land (for free!) to grow on, about 7m by 28 m (or 23ft by 91 ft), and i was wondering if anyone knows A) what I should do to the land before planting, B) roughly how much seed I would need for this amount of land, and C) is linum usitatissimum the right variety for growing flax to eventually make into cloth?

I'm a total novice as I say, but I've just got this idea and I'm desperate to go for it. thanks everyone :)
