What exactly IS the Wallace Sword?

Hello Gents, Another article up. This one I extracted from a fun video we did a few years ago (it's embedded at the bottom). I suspect you all already know the facts behind the sword housed at Stirling, but I find the story interesting anyway; esp. from the standpoint of how we as humans long for memory, identity and a tangible sense of the past. Who here has not wished they had a time machine, right? And of course what our need for heroes motivates us to do. Hope you're all staying cool. Alba gu bràth!

U.S. Military Branch Tartans - Some Quick Notes on Where They Came From

July 4th is like Veteran's Day for me - makes me think of my family and esp. my uncle and father-in-law who both served in Vietnam. So in case anyone is considering wearing a branch tartan kilt this weekend, or wonders what they are/where they come from, I threw this quick run-down together:

https://www.usakilts.com/blog/is-there-a-tartan-just-for-veterans.html

Pictured: The 79th New York Infantry Regiment in (unauthorized) parade uniform for a recruitment drive. I will write about them some other time but just know they were sort of the great-grandaddies of American service branch kilts and _attitude_.

Have a safe and fun holiday!

Are There Really Restricted Tartans? Yep. Here are the facts.

Here's what you need to know about restricted tartans:

The idea of “forbidden tartans” is kinda misunderstood. While some tartans are technically restricted by copyright, trademark, or even law, there are usually very few hard rules about who can wear a tartan today. Most tartans are open for anyone to wear respectfully.

Restricted tartans do exist, but they are rare. Some modern tartans are legally protected by the people or organizations that designed them including those made for educational institutions or corporations. Sorry but you can't wear the McDuck tartan.

Remember that Clan tartans are usually not legally exclusive. Traditionally, wearing a clan tartan shows admiration, family connection, or loyalty, yes. However, there is no rule against wearing the tartan of a clan to which you do not belong.

Royal tartans, such as Balmoral, are considered socially off-limits by convention. Can you get away with wearing Balmoral then? Not a chance really. No reputable mill will sell it to you. ;)

In the end, there are various factors at work when it comes to tartan "policing." Occasionally it is Law (copyright/trademark) but more often it is about etiquette and respect. Many of the so-called “rules” we were taught as kids are simply traditions or opinions passed around in Highland dress culture.

And even how to deal with the dreaded 'Kilt Police'
