My friend recommended this series to me last week, and I ended up binging it pretty quickly. I’ve always loved heartfelt family dramas and youthful romance stories set in summer vibes, similar to Never Have I Ever and 13 Reasons Why. Overall, I’d rate this show 6 out of 10.

Below are my thoughts along with my friend’s opinions. This is just our personal viewing perspective from Chinese viewers, so please take it lightly and no hard feelings!

1. I adore all the mother characters in the show, even Taylor’s mom. They all live fulfilling lives of their own instead of centering their whole world around their children, which stands in huge contrast to how my parents live. Laurel is undoubtedly the most impressive figure among them. She devotes plenty of care to young people while still respecting their personal boundaries, and she sticks firmly to her own principles.
2. I still cannot understand why Belly was so eager to marry Jeremiah. Maybe I am too grown-up to relate to teenage mindsets. The two are still quite young, and their wedding funds all come from Jeremiah’s father. They never seem to realize the problem with this situation, nor do they have stable foundations for their future. Their life ahead remains full of uncertainty. Is it because the American social welfare brings them a sense of security**？（**If so i am so jealous) I would weigh countless matters before getting married. At the very least, couples ought to become financially independent first.
3. Susanna is such a kind and noble woman. She treats everyone around her with tenderness and sincere love, and she possesses an incredibly resilient mind. She acts like the glue holding this big family together and serves as the spiritual pillar of everyone. Belly, however, won't become another Susanna. She Is the one who always take but not give. She has a long way to go.
4. Many teen dramas set up two typical love interests for the female lead. My friend and I classify them into two types: Candy in shit flavor / Shit in Candy flavor. I won’t go into further details here haha.
5. My friend and I are huge fans of the summer atmosphere depicted in The Summer I Turned Pretty. The scenes feel warm, tranquil and refreshing all the way through.
