What do I do with this?

We rent. But the landlord lets us do whatever we want. The former tenant(s) planted the invasive vine in certain areas of the property, but this little area right here, I don’t know what to do with it. It is all rock and dirt and just gets overgrown with weeds like crazy. I have put down pre-emergent, post emergent, and frankly have gone a little bit diabolical about weed killer (yes, I know. I get it. But frankly, herbicide is all that works). No matter what a weed will pop up. Or they won’t die. What was once here was a deck that they had ripped out so now basically all I have is an area of dirt and rocks. It is not my property so I’m not going to spend a fortune, a landscaping, and filling it with more rock or whatever. So my question is, what can I possibly do? I have a fairly large container gardening/above ground gardening section in the very back of the property that gets all the sun I could possibly want. But this section only gets sun until about 1:00 as it is facing west. The sun goes over the house and then it sits in shade. Could I plant a vegetable or whatever in my large containers in this area? Would the weed killer that I’ve already sprayed seep up into the dirt in the roots? I’m just at a loss on what to do. Any good suggestions? What would YOU do?

Again, I don’t want a truck in a bunch of rock or mulch. If I have to, whatever. But I don’t want to spend all that money and I don’t own the property. I hope that makes sense.

I am in Washington state, but I live in the desert portion of the state in southeastern Washington. Zone 5.

Ps. That little wood ramp is for our dog to get him up to his doggie door. Obviously there’s trash that I will be picking up so just disregard that. less
