Woe! Hi-res Dandan upon ye

Chapter art for Dungeon Meshi daemon AU fic, A Weasel Heart in Defiance. It broke 150k words today! If you’re interested in daemon AUs, Chilchuck, and half-foot politics, you might enjoy it. But really - we’re all just here for Dandan content.

Britannica’s “The Loop” visual puzzle game

Britannica, who publish the Encyclopaedia Britannica and are currently suing OpenAI for misusing their reference materials to train models, have a new daily puzzle game called The Loop. https://www.britannica.com/games/loop/ it’s like connecting crossword clues or a chain of thought.

Obviously, it’s Britannica, so they’re going to be curating images for basic quality, literacy and common sense. I am suspicious that they’re not paying an artist for 11 visual assets a day (though some have been reused for multiple puzzles) and choices like Chibi Charles Darwin seem strange for a human brain. The “needle in a haystack” and “hypodermic needle” are both odd to me (images 2 and 3 - needle gradations and the weird shapes of the hay) and I just don’t know why every historical figure is depicted as this weirdly polished chibi. However, I think these images are going to be going through some decent peer review before being used, so I don’t think there are going to be obvious AI art errors.

I am not entirely happy about the images… but I am also concerned with the game content. Some chains of thought have been odd. I have enjoyed playing the game, but honestly, if they’re using AI art then they might be generating clues with AI too.

If the intellectual part of the puzzle is AI-generated, I’ll be rather bothered. I’m also not sure how I feel about the hypocrisy. They’re suing OpenAI! What do you think? Is it something you’d write to Britannica about? I’ve supported them on and off for years.
