Stop trying to save a tech company that already cut your team

After going through a few layoffs, I’ve started looking at extra work, just extra work.

When someone leaves our tech team, our management says everyone needs to “step up” till they find a replacement.

Then weeks passed and nobody got replaced. You’re doing two people’s jobs for the same paycheck.

Before, I used to think I had to prove I was reliable. I picked up extra tickets, covered support, and took on projects that weren't mine. Just led me to burnout with no salary increase.

But take note that I still do my job properly. I just don't think it's my responsibility to work like two engineers because they wanted to cut costs.

Our younger developer asked why I don't have side projects on GitHub

I've been working in tech for a few years now. And one time, a younger dev on my team looked at my GitHub.

He asked why I don't have much personal projects there. I told him I don't code after work unless I need to. He looked surprised.

Some people are spending their evenings building SaaS projects, grinding LeetCode, or learning another programming language. But it's not in my vocabulary.

I used to feel kinda guilty about it, especially when I saw others posting their side projects and certifications.

I love coding, but I don't want to get my life revolved around it.

Maybe I'm just getting old where I just wanted peace after work. How about you?

waited too long to realize I could transfer my experience to other careers

hey y’all, spend my years into thinking that the only jobs I’m qualified for where the ones with the exact job title on my resume

after getting laid off, i keep applying to the same roles (barely got interviews)

that's when I started wondering if my experience actually fit other industries

but… I had no clue before where to start

wish I had looked into transferable skills way earlier instead of boxing myself into one career path

Hiring the cheapest developer ended up costing me more

A few months ago, I looked for a developer for my project. That's why I started getting quotes.

Then I saw a freelancer where his rate was also half of everyone else.

So I though, "Why pay more if the end result is the same?"

Turns out... it wasn't.

The code wasn't terrible, but we kept running into misunderstandings.

At some point I realized I wasn't saving money anymore. I was just paying less per hour while spending way more hours getting to the finish line.

has anyone else learned this the hard way, or did I just get unlucky?

Why does everything make sense in tutorials until you build something alone?

Am I the only one? I've noticed this happens to a lot of people learning to code like me

You can finish a React, Python, or full-stack tutorial and feel like you're getting it. Then you open a blank project and suddenly you don't know what to build first, how to organize files, or even where to start.

Did you get out of tutorial hell by forcing yourself to build projects? Or was there something else that finally made everything click?

Curious what actually worked for people here.

my friend is a hiring manager (told me these tips to improve your chances of getting hired)

Had a conversation with a friend who's a hiring manager for a remote company

While talking, she mentioned these things (some of them surprised me):

1) Don’t say main reason you're applying is because the job is remote

– at first, I was like “Huh?”🤣🤣🤣🤣

– then she clarified that we should focus more on the role, the team, or the work itself

2) Dress like you're actually going to an interview

– you can wear anything decent like polo, t-shirt, or anything presentable

– not necessary to wear suit, but it’s wear if you’re half naked or wearing sleeveless

3) Keep your background simple

– just clean or blurred background is already okay

4) Don't just repeat what's already on your resume

– very cliche but very effective

– talk about specific situations, what you did, and the results you got.

5) Test your tech before the interview

– first impression always last so always make sure your mic, camera and internet works

any tips we might overlook?

bootcamp grads who couldn't land a tech job, what are you doing now?

I just graduated from a bootcamp, and I’m curious where everyone ended up.

Did you eventually get into tech? Or did you switch careers completely?

If you moved on, what are you doing now, and do you still plan on breaking into tech someday?

Seems like the job market has been rough for juniors lately. That's why I'm interested in what your career looks like after graduation.

Would love to hear not just success stories. Maybe you ended up taking a different path?

LinkedIn Premium is probably not worth it for most job seekers (here’s why)

Here are the features people talked about (along with their expectation vs. reality):

1. InMail
Expectation: Message recruiters and hiring managers directly.
Reality: They either got ignored or never received a response.

2. Who viewed your profile
Expectation: Sounds useful in theory.
Reality: Many profile views are hidden, private, or anonymous (you could see that recruiters viewed your profile, but who?).

3. AI job matching and "top applicant" insights
Expectation: Their AI can understand your industry and find a few opportunities.
Reality: Some said their recommendations were inaccurate, or the opportunities weren't enough to justify the price.

4. Recruiter visibility
Expectation: You can get more messages and interviews.
Reality: You still need to strengthen your profile, but having it is a plus.

TL;DR:

  • Free trial = worth trying
  • Full price = probably not
  • Recruiters and salespeople seem to get more value from it than job seekers

If you have LinkedIn Premium, did it actually help you land interviews? Or was it mostly a waste of money?

one thing that helped me survive job search burnout

have you ever experienced this “job search burnout” phenomenon?

recently, i’m trying to hop on different opportunities online

all i thought back then was that I need to find motivation (which doesn’t work)

The problem is that motivation comes and goes. Rejection emails, ghosting, and seeing hundreds of applicants on every posting can kill it pretty fast.

rn, i don’t treat like a short-term goal but I do it liike as a routine

Here are few things that worked for me:

  1. I only apply 1-3 jobs per day instead of spending it all day
  2. I also update my resume once and reusing it for similar roles
  3. I’m just a cute human little being, so I also take break when I feel burn out
  4. I also focus on things I can control (like my emotion)

It’s tough to break into the job market right now.

So I highly suggest that you should not only build motivation. Build discipline as well.

For those who went through job search burnout, what helped you keep going?

My thoughts about upcoming iPhone 18 rumors

https://preview.redd.it/loxbhfm0jk6h1.png?width=3277&format=png&auto=webp&s=7d2e2c447554f2373ce37fe2440fa987fa3c59be

After seeing this lineup, it looks the same again. I’m not an iPhone user, so I can’t tell if they changed much or not. Maybe their looks don’t change that much, and it still aligns with their branding. I just can’t help but compare it to Android phones, which look like they’re innovating with every release.

The iPhone Ultra (new to their lineup) looks promising. It looks like their first foldable smartphone, and I would like to see further about its features. I think they use the same camera as the iPhone Air, and I also don’t think the battery could last that long. I remember this is something that Samsung keeps bragging about against its competitor 😆

The iPhone 18 release date is expected to be this upcoming September 2026. This means we're only 3 months away from that anticipated date 👀

Any rumors about iOS 27 features (if any)?
