First time cat owner-neutering
Hi all. I hope this is allowed here because I don’t exactly have feral cats, but do have outdoor cats.
My friendly six month old male cat is going to be neutered and vaccinated on Thursday morning at the humane society. He’s a sweet boy who comes to us and likes to be held. I bought a small carrier to transport him in and have set that outside to acclimate to it and he loves being in there (with the door open). I plan to have him recover from surgery in a large dog crate in our garage overnight.
Originally I planned to catch him the morning of the appointment as the vast majority of time he is on our porch looking for attention in the morning. I figure we can place him in the carrier with little to no drama since he’s so trusting of us.
But then I thought, what if that morning he’s not around and I can’t find him? It’s rare, but he can wander. I’d hate to miss the appointment. Additionally, I cannot ensure that he is fasting the night before surgery. He’s a good mouser.
Am I crazy to consider keeping him in the large dog crate overnight the night before surgery so I can control location and fasting? He’s never spent any time constrained like that. How likely is it that he will be wigged out? Will he be a maniac in the morning when it’s time to transfer him from the large crate to the smaller carrier? If crated he would be in our garage for the first time. Have a blanket and litter box inside. Any thoughts?
