Hi everyone! I’m a 19-year-old female, and I recently had a fistulotomy with seton placement a few days ago. I’m here asking for some advice because my surgeon only told me to clean the wound with soap, but I wasn’t really given detailed instructions on how to properly care for it or what to expect during recovery.
Here are a few questions I have:
• When cleaning the wound, should I also wipe it with purified water wipes and remove all the dried discharge? Or should I leave it alone? I read that removing healing tissue can slow recovery, but at the same time, I don’t want to leave dried discharge there and risk getting an infection.
• After I recover from this stage, what usually happens next? What will my doctor do during the next follow-up, especially since I have a seton in place?
• I was prescribed lactulose syrup for 5 days to make bowel movements easier. Should I continue taking it after those 5 days if I’m still having pain during bowel movements, or should I stop unless my doctor tells me otherwise?
This whole experience has honestly been affecting my mental health. As a teenage girl, it’s been really difficult and scary to go through. I’m just hoping I heal well and can finally put this behind me.
Thank you so much in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply. This community has become a safe place for me because you all understand what it’s like. 🥹❤️
