Burnt Umber

Is it always so grainy? I’ve mulled the hell out of it and added more and more binder. It was so grainy during the mulling process and grainy on paper (much more so on lightweight copy paper than cotton paper). As I write this it’s not quite dry on nicer paper. There didn’t seem to be an end point to mulling this pigment. I suppose it got a little less grainy after a while of mulling. I’m guessing it’s because the particles are larger..

Binder Recipe

This isn’t my recipe and I’ve found that it’s too sticky. I’m wondering what other people think of it?

X6 tablespoon distilled water
X3 tablespoon gum arabic
X2 tablespoon honey (or glycerin)

This is what I started with and I’ve been changing each day because each attempt has been sticky for days. I’ve massively reduced the amount of honey. Is this too much honey/glycerin? I’ve recently seen that people use much less.

Mica

Last post for today…

I’m trying to make a watercolour paint with both mica and pigment. When I touch the paint on paper it comes off on my finger. I didn’t add more binder because of the fluidity when mulling. Should I add more or should I change the binder for mica?

Solidity/Soft

Hello,

I’m new to making watercolour paints. I’ve experiemented a lot in a short space of time with binder formulation and binder to pigment ratios. I still have a lot of work to do. A while ago I bought handmade watercolours on Etsy, they’re great. Recently, I noticed how hard they are. All of mine, the ones that have dried included are still quite soft, they’re squash-able and you can easily leave an indentation in the pain. So I’m wondering, how hard/soft are your paints?

Lots of colours

I’ve seen that some people make/have a lot of colours, I thought you only need a few main colours because they can be mixed together. Is it worth buying more colours of pigment? I’m new to making paint and I’m very new to painting. I decided to make my own watercolours before deciding I’d learn to paint..
