Beginner UPSC Self-Study: Teacher choices for concept-clearing & answer writing

Hey everyone,

I'm starting my UPSC CSE prep with a primary focus on self-study. However, I plan to selectively watch lectures whenever I hit conceptual roadblocks, struggle with PYQs, or need guidance on subject-specific Mains answer writing.

Based on my initial research, I’ve compiled a list of the following educators:

General Studies

History (Modern, Ancient, Medieval) & Art & Culture (GS-1): Pratik Nayak, Avadh Ojha, Neeraj Rao

Geography & Environment (GS-1, GS-3): Sudarshan Gurjar, Rushikesh Dudhat, Himanshu Sharma

Polity, Governance & Social Justice (GS-2): M. Puri, Atish Mathur, Jatin Gupta

Indian Society (GS-1): Smriti Shah, Vikas Ranjan

IR & Internal Security (GS-2, GS-3): Pavneet Singh, Shubhra Ranjan

Indian Economy (GS-3): Mrunal Patel, Vibhas Jha, Sriram Srirangam

Science & Tech, Environment & Disaster Mgmt (GS-3): Dr. Shivin Chaudhary, Ayaz Khan

Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude (GS-4): S. Ansari, Atul Garg, D.K. Balaji

Essay Writing & Value Addition: Dr. Vikas Divyakirti, M.K. Yadav, S. Ansari

Mains Answer Writing & Quality Enhancement: Ayush Sinha, M.K. Yadav, Dr. Shivin Chaudhary

Sociology Optional: Sleepy Classes (Shekhar & Team), Vikas Ranjan, Pranay Aggarwal

Would really appreciate your insights on a few things:

  1. Teaching styles: What are the pros/cons of their teaching styles for someone relying primarily on self-study?

  2. Top picks: Who among these is best for crisp, high-yield concept clearing without wasting hours on videos?

  3. Blind spots: Am I missing any crucial subjects, or are there better teacher alternatives/hidden gems I should know about?

TL;DR: Starting UPSC prep primarily via self-study, but looking for targeted lectures to clear tough concepts and learn Mains answer writing approaches. Above is my mapped list of top educators, need feedback on their teaching styles, who to pick for high-yield topic clearing, and any blind spots I missed.

Thanks in advance!

Need advice: Resources for UPSC Compulsory Odia (Paper A) ?

Jay Jagannath,

I’m preparing for UPSC and need guidance on clearing Paper A (Odia).

My Background: CBSE schooling with Odia up to Class 10. I can speak and read Odia fine, but my formal writing speed, vocabulary, and grammar are rusty.

Since it’s qualifying (75/300 marks), I want an efficient strategy without over-investing time.

Could anyone who has cleared or prepared for this share:

* Recommended Books: Standard grammar books (e.g., Odia Sahitya Vyakaran Class 9/10) or specific guidebooks for Paper A?

* Coverage & Practice:

* Essay (100M): Best source for formal/technical vocabulary?

* Precis & Comprehension (120M): Tips to improve summarization and writing speed in Odia script?

* Translation (40M): Recommended sources for English-Odia translation practice?

* Grammar (30M): High-yield topics to target?

* PYQs: Are past 5–10 years' PYQs enough to pass safely?

Any book names, tips, or resource links would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!
