House insurance with solar
I’m currently going through quotes for a grid-tied residential solar install and I'm keen to understand any insurance implications.
My current roof is long-run colour steel and is 10 years old, I'm in Hamilton so harsh environmental conditions (salt, sulfur etc) aren't a concern. I've been up on the roof recently to spray some patches of lichen and my untrained eyes couldn't see any areas of concern.
Things I’m curious about:
- Did you disclose the solar install to your insurer?
- If yes:
- Was it a new build or retrofit?
- How did it affect your premiums?
- What region are you located it?
- Did they require any extra documentation/certification?
- Did they specifically ask about batteries, EV chargers, backup capability etc?
- If no:
- Was that based on advice from installer/broker/insurer?
- Any concerns around future claims or non-disclosure?
- Has anyone changed insurer because of solar?
- Any insurers that were especially easy/difficult to deal with?
I would really appreciate hearing real-world experiences from people who already have systems installed.
To be clear, I'm leaning towards disclosure to be safe but just wanted to hear about other peoples experiences.
Thanks in advance!
