First Year Advice

I’m going into my first year of Bio Sci this fall and was wondering if any upper-year students could share some advice!

What supplies or study tools did you find most useful, and what helped you stay organized and keep up with your courses?

Also, are there any apps, resources, or study methods you wish you had started using earlier?

I’d really appreciate any tips or things you wish you knew going into first year.

Ling 1000

i’m supposed to be taking ling 1000 winter 2027 and it is a approved liberal elective for BSC first year. But for some reason it’s saying it’s restricted.

Do I look for another elective or what?

Bio 1070/1080

I'm debating whether to take Bio 1070 or Bio 1080 first semester. I only want to take one bio in the fall since I'm also taking Physics 1030, Math 1080, and Chem 1040, and I know that's gonna be a pretty heavy semester, especially with Chem.

For anyone who's taken both, which bio would you recommend taking first? Which one has the lighter workload or is easier to manage with my other courses?

My plan is to take the other two bio courses in the winter.

liberal elective

Hi I am going into bio sci next year at guelph, and I am a bit confused as a to what liberal electives are good GPA boosters.

I've heard the SPTM 1020 and Psych 1000 are good but Psych has a heavy course load.

If you have taken any elective pls feel free to share your advice.

Waterloo vs Guelph for premed?

I’m really stuck between Waterloo Health/Life Sci and Guelph Biological Sciences for premed and would love some honest advice from current students or grads.

My end goal is med school, so GPA, opportunities, and overall vibe matter a lot to me. How hard is it to maintain a high GPA in either program? and what’s the workload and social vibe like? and would you recommend it for someone aiming for med school?

Also, I know at Guelph I think you need around a 75% average to transfer into Biomed, but does Waterloo have a certain average/GPA you need to maintain to move on to next year or stay in the program?

I don't know a lot about Waterloo first year course, so any help regarding that would also be really helpful. Any honest advice would really help because I’ve been going back and forth for so long

Guelph - biomed vs biological

I need help deciding between Biological Sciences and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Guelph. I got accepted into both, and my end goal is med school (not just aiming for one school like McMaster though). I know both programs do not have co-op, but there are internship opportunities and share similar first-year/core courses, which is why I’m stuck.

If anyone is currently in either program or graduated from them, especially pre-med students, which one would you recommend? Like which program is better for maintaining a strong GPA, getting opportunities, and preparing for med school?

Also, if Biomed is the better option, I believe I’d still have the chance to switch later.
