Marriage-based green card WITHOUT a lawyer
Hey there,
My partner (U.S. citizen) and I have been together for the past five years. I’m currently in the U.S. on an F-1 visa and will be starting my OPT soon. However, we recently decided to get married so I can apply for a green card (and also to give him the possibility of living in my country in the future if we decide to move there, since he would also need a visa or permanent residency).
I believe my case is very straightforward: neither of us has any criminal record, I’ve never overstayed any of my visits to the U.S., and I’ve always complied with the requirements of my F-1 visa, etc.
We also have a strong relationship that we can easily prove. For example, he has traveled to my country, attended my sister’s wedding, I’ve attended his family’s Christmas parties, etc.
I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar situation and went through the process without a lawyer? We’re already spending a lot of money on a prenup, in addition to all the immigration fees we’ll have to pay, so I’m trying to figure out whether hiring an immigration attorney is really necessary.
Thank you very much!
