Less energy refills now, for all?

For several weeks or months now, I notice that energy recharges in lessons have become scarce. Mostly just one or two units. I often have to watch two or three ads for each lesson, to keep enough energy. This was not the case half a year ago.

I finished the Polish course at Level 30 and reached 30 in French. I had started a bit of Dutch, Klingon and reverse French-German long ago but didn't continue. Started Japanese newly.

Is this a general change, or may this be a configuration, to push long-term users into a paid subscription, or does it happen when doing a certain number of courses, or reaching certain levels in courses, or finishing (like the small Polish course)?

As for paid courses, I started Babbel (108€/year), and it's really a major difference. I'm learning Polish from the beginning, knowing the vocab, but completely new to actual grammar rules (quite complex, not suitable for Duolingo's intuitive learning). As for Japanese, I'm not really satisfied - few words and sentences always repeating; a large part is foreign words (in Katakana). Spoken pronounciation is often very different from the expected writing.
