Is it worth it?

I’m nearly 40 and currently earn around £42,000 a year. My employer also pays a 10% pension contribution, which is a great benefit. The downside is that the job is very physically demanding, and the shift pattern is 12‑hour shifts on a 4‑on‑4‑off permanent nights rota. I don’t mind the long hours or working any days — that part doesn’t bother me — it’s the physical strain that’s becoming the issue.

I’ve been thinking about getting my Class 1 licence to move into HGV driving, but I’m unsure whether it’s worth it at my age. As a new driver, most companies want experience, and I’m worried I’d end up taking a pay cut and losing the benefits I have now, without being able to earn enough to make up the difference in the long run
