I hate Filipino work culture
Obligatory throwaway account disclaimer, blah blah blah...
I've been in this industry for over 30 years, with the last 20 spent in my current line of work. During that time, I've managed to avoid most of the office politics and have been fortunate enough to work in organizations where people were generally treated with respect, i.e. not a Filipino work culture.
A few months ago, I accepted what looked like a great opportunity. As it turns out, the old saying still applies: if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.
Apparently, my compensation package included a few extras that weren't mentioned during the interviews:
- A micromanaging manager who changes direction so often that keeping up is nearly impossible.
- A workplace culture where declining after-hours social activities is somehow viewed as a lack of commitment.
- Leadership that seems far more concerned about NPS scores than the people responsible for achieving them.
In more than two decades, I've never had my professional confidence shaken the way it has been over the past three months. Funny how even the most experienced employees can start questioning themselves when they're in the wrong environment.
I've always known a good salary and an impressive job title mean very little if the workplace itself is unhealthy. It's funny how I'm being reminded of it right now.
