I spent weeks lying in the wet sand at sunrise, just waiting for the lighting to align. This morning, it finally happened. 🌅

Meet the piping plover, a tiny, endangered shorebird that weighs barely more than a single AA battery. Capturing a head-on flight shot is challenging enough, but watching its orientation completely shift was mind-blowing. These birds are masters of precision.

If you’ve ever tried to track a piping plover chick on the shore, you know they move like absolute lightning. One second they’re blending perfectly into the pebbles, and the next, they’re charging through the sand with an unbelievable amount of attitude for someone weighing less than an ounce.

Getting low enough to capture this dramatic rim lighting meant laying flat in the sand, but watching this little one step directly into the sun’s glow made every grain of sand worth it.
