Prep with a toddler and nursing - positive experience
I want to share my story as someone who spent a lot of time on this subreddit before my scopes and hopefully encourage a new mom or anyone that it’s really not that bad!!
I am a 31F and my son is about to turn 2. Postpartum I had rectal bleeding and then more recently I was having early satiety, abdominal pain, abnormal bowel movements and weight loss. I was so terrified- so terrified- of having colon cancer. I had a CT scan that showed proctitis and it was recommended that I have an EGD and colonoscopy.
Prep:
I was instructed to do the dulcolax/miralax prep. The instructions were 4 dulcolax at 4 pm, 248g miralax in 64oz Gatorade starting at 6pm and finished by 8pm. No red meat, nuts, or corn for three days before. Arrival time 8 am Tuesday.
I started tapering off my food on Saturday. I made a green garlic and jalapeño chicken and rice soup that I ate for 2 days and then did not eat dinner Sunday night. I had a little bit of bone broth and juice on Monday but otherwise had water. I think this REALLY helped prep go smoothly for me.
I took the dulcolax at 12pm and starting drinking the miralax at 3pm and finished at 4:30 ish. I was on the toilet on and off from 4:00-7:30pm. My husband was able to watch our son during this time which is a necessity! You really need to be close to a toilet for a few hours. By 5pm my bowel movements were clear. It was really not uncomfortable except my legs would fall asleep from sitting so long! I was able to nurse my son to sleep at 8 pm and I slept very well. I got up 2 times to have more water bowel movements in the night. In the morning I had no more movements and was comfortable at the office waiting for my procedure. My doctor said my prep was good.
The procedure itself was great! I had anesthesia and had a very nice rest. No cancer or proctitis so I am very happy and relieved!! I hope this gives someone hope that their experience doesn’t have to be a nightmare!
