Cheap-ish option for gear shift upgrade: 987 shifter
Following on from my spoiler dashboard button install, the next project was to make the gear shifts a bit more precise. I looked into some short-shift kits, but they can be expensive and/or require more work and expertise than I am able for.
So I landed on installing a gear shifter from the 987, which is a direct replacement for the stock 986 one - you just have to take care that the cables are lined up as they were before.
After some drama with a completely dead battery and a broken bonnet/frunk release cable, I was finally able to give it a test drive today. It's not a night and day difference, but definitely feels a more precise with a shorter throw, and with less play than with the stock one.
The only thing worrying me is that the cable on the left hand side for left/right movements slipped on to the new shifter far more easily than it came off the old one, so I really hope it doesn't slip off while on a drive.
Total cost was about EUR240, and someone more competent than me could probably get it done in an hour. You need to remove the console between the seats, but I'd already done that to do the GT3 style console delete mod.
