Missing news context as an international student???

Like I get the gist of what's happening but there's always some context I'm missing that everyone else (who is not an international student) just seems to know lmao.

Happened to me again today and it got me thinking if other internationals deal with this too.

As an international student, do you ever feel like you're missing the full picture when it comes to local news?

You can translate the words, but not always the context. A political debate, a housing decision, a strike, you read about it, but you're missing the backstory that locals just grew up with. Which parties actually stand for what? Why is this specific issue such a big deal here? What does this mean for you practically, as someone who wasn't born here?

I'm curious how other students/expats deal with this. Do you actively try to follow local news, or have you kind of given up on it? Do you rely on friends to explain things, or just piece it together yourself?

And has there ever been a moment where you found out something important way too late, something that actually affected your daily life?

Would love to hear your experience, thx 😊
