Update from my Sallie Mae post
So it turns out Sallie Mae CAN work with you if you complain to the consumer financial protection bureau. They also work with you when you’re at your absolute last moment before default. We were able to get a 2% interest payment for the next three years. It will increase after that but by then I will refinance my loans and be in a better financial position. My payment went from 1711 a month to 898. Moral of the story is, most of the commenters on my original post were wrong. They CAN work with us. We have options. If you’re in a pickle, complain to the consumer financial protection bureau. I’m not sure if that worked or not but they went from “ we can’t help” to “okay here you go” in a matter of one phone call.
