How does EVE know what a matryoshka is?

There is this one small interaction in the Matrix 11 sewer that always raised an eyebrow across my multiple playthroughs. When you open one of the gates before the survivors camp checkpoint Adam sighs that it's just more sewer and EVE makes a remark that the situation is like a matryoshka doll. Adam merely replies "What..." in confusion and the dialogue ends. Lily is silent.

What I'm wondering is, how would EVE know what a matroyshka doll is, it's a highly specific piece of knowledge from a culture that is also apparently foreign to Adam as he sounds like he hasn't heard of the phrase himself.

EVE has been characterised as quite ignorant of the surface world and culture, not being familiar with what books, maps, even music even are at the start of the game and even as she progresses through the story we often see this. If this was supposed to show her character growth then why would Adam not comment on it or inquire further? After all we know his motivations so that should be interesting to him. Besides, her new understanding of the human culture is displayed quite well in the shrine anyway as she points it's a place to honour the dead. As far as I can tell none of the side content or any interactions with NPCs could lead EVE to pick up this particular piece of knowledge.

Ultimately I realize it can just be handwaved as a throwaway line but it's surprising to me as otherwise the writing is quite stellar (heh) when it comes to stuff like this. Perhaps it could also be a localisation issue, I'm not sure what they say in Korean but at least Adam's short reply seemed to be the same.
