Kolkata surprised us in the best possible way ❤️
I’ve been seeing posts from the Kolkata subreddit on my feed for quite some time, and this year while planning a small family trip, I randomly thought why not Kolkata?
We’re from Bangalore, and honestly, this trip turned out to be one of the warmest experiences we’ve had.
We stayed at JW Marriott, JBS Haldane Avenue and while hotels like JW Marriott are obviously known for hospitality, what genuinely surprised me was the warmth of the people of Kolkata outside the hotel as well.
From the moment we landed till the moment we left, people were kind, patient, and helpful everywhere.
One thing that really stood out to me was how welcoming everyday interactions felt. Back home, even simple cab rides can sometimes feel stressful, but in Kolkata the experience felt completely different.
During our trip, we were going to Dakshineswar Kali Temple and met a local cab driver who was extremely helpful. He patiently explained where to go, how to travel around, and when I mentioned that I wanted to experience the metro, he suggested we take the metro from there and head to Park Street. Small things like this made the city feel very personal and welcoming.
Another incident really touched us. My father accidentally forgot his phone in a taxi enroute Belur Math. When we called the driver, he was extremely polite and cooperative. He even offered to come back and return it. We eventually coordinated another way to collect it, but his honesty and helpful attitude genuinely meant a lot to us.
Also, one thing we were initially worried about was food, since we’re vegetarian and had heard from many people in Bangalore that Kolkata might be difficult for vegetarians. But honestly, we had a great experience with food too specially baingun bhaja, yellow Dal and Echorer Chop are our new favorites.
Even my family kept talking about how nice everyone was throughout the trip.
The food, the people, the vibe of the city everything felt special. Kolkata has such a unique warmth that’s hard to explain unless you experience it yourself.
We came for a short 3-night trip, but we’re definitely coming back again and next time for much longer.
