Gwenyth: regarding physical vs magic damage and resistances

(Figures I’d spell her name wrong in the title 🤦)

In weighing how deep to go on pulling Gwyneth, I’m contemplating how well she would synergize with Evie’s magical resistance debuffing. Formally, on her overview, Gwyneth is listed as “marksman, physical,” but then the actual video plays out characterizing her as an arcane archer type (to use a general D&D term) who flavors/enchants her arrows with lightning, ice and fire.

Now I know there are actual “marksman, magical” units in the game so maybe I’m overthinking how Gwyneth “seems” given her themes, but is it really likely in the way the game works that Gwyneth and Evie have zero synergy because all that lightning, fire and ice are formally “not magical?”

I could just be thinking too much in a “general fantasy gaming” sense here and just need to read the damned game when it tells me “no really, she’s not magical.” I’m newish so if that’s the case, I accept that. Just thought I’d ask.

Good enough is, indeed, good enough.

If I’m wise, this should be the last even remotely negative or worried post I make here, but I do want to counter the dark clouds this subreddit has put in my head recently with some positive perspective.

I am a veteran of MMORPGs and am used to the cycle of “this change sucks, we must give feedback, and sculpt a narrative of outrage because this game is my whole personality” that I see happening here lately. In my “home game” I’m inoculated against this because said game is broad and diverse in content enough that a very powerful axiom has carried me through the dark times:

“Good enough is good enough.”

Like my “home game,” AFKJ has a lane where this rule works, and it is in that lane that I will endeavor to find enjoyment going forward. So many elements of life and gaming try to push us into a hyper-competitive mindset, and “good enough” requires a personal reprogramming of that element. I have successfully pulled off that reprogramming in my “home game,” and it appears I’ll need to do that in AFKJ. I have the tools, I’ll be ok, and I invite everyone that wants to keep loving AFKJ to ponder the same path.

I do not deny that AFKJ has a whalebait economy, but I’m not competing against whales. I’m a collector, a lover of the story and of the PVE thrill of “hitting the button and watching my action figures go.” I “cleared” the ToM seasonal resolution criteria not knowing a thing about the whale-ish end of the game. It wasn’t until I came here that I was hit with the wall of “rawr game is doomed and you shouldn’t be happy rawr.” I am leaving that vibe behind because good enough is indeed good enough.

When it’s not, I’ll stop playing, but I doubt that moment will come any time soon so long as I am reasonable, realistic and not competitively minded with my goals. I welcome you all to try the same exercise.

I’m very excited for crown of ashes, and if it’s needed or if it helps, I give you permission to be the same.

Happy gaming!

“Faction talents??”

So, I thought I understood the game enough after doing my first full season in tower of memory, but I saw a reference in the crown of ashes countdown info to “faction talents,” which I assumed were another name for something I knew already, but then I went looking and searching and saw screens I cannot find in game.

Is this system still a thing? Does it require paragon (which I almost have but not yet) or something? I can’t imagine where it would be hidden but I’m at a total loss here.

I made Queen Seralyth in WoW!

My favorite story in all of AFK Journey, after bingeing them all and loving them, is easily that of Sal'Thorin and the Essail. I am a long time World of Warcraft player who makes many characters, some of them tributes of other IPs, and I had a eureka moment today to make Queen Seralyth as an evoker: a class introduced a handful of years ago alongside its complimentary race of mutant dragon soldiers who can turn into elf-ish humanoids (so that all of the displayable gear doesn't go to waste on their awkward dragon bodies) called Dracthyr.

In my headcanon, my Merlin (who is based on a multi-game OC of mine who is also dragon-adjacent) spared her life, dialed back some of her mutation, and zapped (I believe the kids say “Isekai”) her to Azeroth. She's dead to Esperia, but he showed her mercy in this small way, again for reasons tied to his dragon-adjacent OC backstory.

The evoker class, which is essentially the "you're a dragon and you do dragon things" class is the perfect expression of a character whose claim to power is entirely stolen from dragons and resulted in a mutation that has her somewhere between elf-ish wilder and dragon. Because we don’t know what a less-mutated Seralyth looks like I have a lot of freedoms with her. I am also considering a night elf priest Velara down the road. (Velara’s my girl, y’all!)

This is a first draft look at Seralyth and her addon-enabled RP nameplate. I may yet give her horns in both forms and I have some other armor appearances I might try on her, but I wanted to show this to perhaps the only community that will get the reference! I can't do fan art, but I can do this!
