Bouya Harumichi, in essence, is a simple character. A silly guy most of the time, but who can be raw and serious when needed. And that works, and we love him for it.
But the thing or things that make Harumichi a great character are his own philosophy, his concept of freedom and loyalty, and the way he is always prepared to shed his own blood for his friends while remaining immature and somewhat stupid, but in his OWN way.
Takahashi, while Crows was being published, wrote Bouya Harumichi with concepts so solid that he eventually became more than a character; he became a SYMBOL of what it means to be a delinquent and what it means to be a free spirit. This might sound silly, but sometimes I see myself comparing Harumichi to figures like Diogenes of Sinope or Max Stirner (even though they have nothing to do with each other, lol) in the way he stays loyal to his own principles.
I know that his friendship with Bulldog, Yasuo, and the Ebizuka Trio and his fights with Rindaman made him a bit more sociable, and during the manga, we can see him mature a little bit, but I think we can agree that it is not enough to change his essence in a significant way.
