Doc said he doesn't give valium...is this normal?

I was under the impression I could get a Valium to calm my nerves. I'm very anxious but I don't want to go under sedation as that would make me even more freaked out. The options he gave me were local anesthesia or sedation. When I asked about a Valium he said he doesn't like to give them out because it makes patients too squirrelly, in his words.

This isn't some back alley operation, this is a well known, major hospital chain in my area. And the doc doing it is chief of urology there with multiple awards and accolades in urology, and specializes in microsurgery, so not just some random bozo. But I thought it was a bit odd he said they don't do valium.
