[GM Help] Forced PC Sacrifice: The "Twin Resonance" Storyline in 2078 Night City. Is this too much?
Hey choombas,
First let me come out clean from the top. this post was written with the help of AI. all the ideas and mechanics are mine, it's just that I have it all in my head and while it makes perfect sense in there I have a problem with getting it out in a cohesive manner, hence the help from AI. Please don't stone me over it. now to the post itself.
I’m GMing a campaign set in 2078 (one year after the events of CP2077/Edgerunners) using the Cyberpunk Red system. I’ve got a narrative hook I’m working on, and I wanted to get the community’s temperature on a planned PC death.
The Setup:
Two of my players are playing twin sisters, Sonya and Tanya, who emigrated from the Neo-Soviet Union.
Sonya: A Rockerboy ("NightCity Bitch") dealing with PTSD from a military desertion.
Tanya: vehicle tech. the pc is still fleshing out their character and backstory.
The Secret Hook (The "Project Dioscuri"):
Unbeknownst to them, they were part of a secret Biotechnica experiment. They have a "Neural Bridge" linking them. I’m introducing a homebrew mechanic called Twin Resonance:
The Buff: When they are within 50m of each other, they get +1 or +2 to Reflexes/Initiative because they subconsciously predict each other's moves.
The Cost: It’s a slow-burn neurological decay. As the campaign progresses, they’ll start sharing pain, smelling what the other smells, and eventually suffering "synaptic bleed."
The Antagonist:
They are being handled by a "High-end Fixer" named Vane, who is actually an undercover Biotechnica Agent. He’s using them to run "False Flag" operations to destabilize Arasaka and Militech so Biotechnica can rise to the top. He’s also "stabilizing" them with injections that actually accelerate the resonance.
The Finale / The Killing Choice:
The "Project Dioscuri" documentation (which they’ll find) states that the human brain can’t handle two consciousnesses on one bridge. Eventually, the bridge will collapse, killing both. The only way to survive is the "Sol-Ascension Protocol": one sister must "absorb" the neural matrix of the other.
The Plan:
At the climax of the story line, they will have to choose. One sister survives and her consciousness absorbs the other one. the surviving sister will be one person in two bodies with the memories of both, while the other character dies permanently.
My Questions for the Crew:
PC Death: Cyberpunk is all about tragedy, but is "scripting" a situation where one PC must die too railroad-y? I plan to make the choice 100% theirs.
Mechanics: Does the +Reflexes buff feel like a fair trade-off for a terminal diagnosis later in the game?
Thanks for reading all the way down here and for your critiques chooms, really appreciate it.
